Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Life has many distractions that can overwhelm you, even divert you from fully sensing Jesus’ peace and presence. Scripture gives you a good example for facing life’s obstacles. You can either be blessed or stressed. That was the difference between Mary and Martha. Mary was occupied with Jesus and was blessed Martha was preoccupied with her situation and was stressed. Scripture applies it to your life. Martha was distracted; you can fill your time with activities and your home with noise so that you can shut God out. Your relationship with Christ cannot grow properly or fully if you are living with constant distractions.
Life is so full of distractions that you end up living for no higher purpose than to get through another day.
Martha, Martha, on several occasions, according to Luke’s account, Jesus repeated a name when he wanted to make some unusually impressive statement. Understand the spiritual implications If you are worried and upset about many things, Worrying accomplishes little or nothing. Proverbs 12:25 - "An anxious heart weighs a person down."
But only one thing is needed, No matter what your circumstance, you CAN be set free! You may need to adjust your priorities and eliminate some things, which consume your time and clutter of your thoughts; but true worship at His feet is worth it ALL.
The one thing is needed Matt 6:33: Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Your primary concern in this life should not be pleasing and serving yourself. It should be to know and serve God. His "kingdom" is His rule over the earth, His authority over you as His creation.
Your first concern should be understanding who God is and how you can be right with him.
Mary has chosen what is better She was listening to Jesus teach God’s Word. That precious Word was more important than anything Martha might be busy doing.
The secret for success: If you want to be distressed -- look within. If you want to be defeated -- look back. If you want to be distracted -- look around. If you want to be dismayed -- look ahead. If you want to be delivered -- look up too Jesus! Your Choices make all the difference.
The very things, which you allow occupy your heart and mind, will determine if you are Stressed or Blessed.
