When you look at what you treasure, you will know where your heart really is.

The things of this earth will not last, and yet it is in them that you so often choose to put your hope. When you put your hopes and dreams into bricks and mortar…or more likely wood and aluminum siding…eventually you discover how true are the words of Jesus in Matthew, (Matt 6: 19-24) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” God’s desire for you is that He be your dwelling place. That you store up all your hopes and dreams in him. When God becomes your dwelling place the the stuff of this world, houses and all, can be put in their proper perspective. They are blessings from God and resources to be used for His glory. These things come and go. There are times of plenty and times of want. At any moment you may be called to give them up or they may be taken from you. But if your hope is in the Lord then your home is always secure.

Whatever you have in life, be it money or possessions or even time, you aren’t given them in life so that you can store them. When you store them, and tend them, and become afraid at the thought of letting them go, then they have become your treasure – and they have your heart.

The issue Jesus is getting at in His teaching is not that you should rid yourself of all material possessions. The issue is where your heart is. The issue is loyalty - what are you going to do with your possessions rather than what they are going to do with you. If you are loyal to Christ, your money and your possessions will be used properly – and what you do with them will prove that Christ is your treasure or He’s is not.

Jesus wants you to recognize that no matter how much lip service you give to honoring Him, when you look at what you treasure, you will know where your heart really is. And once you know, ask yourself if you are satisfied with what you can see.
